JUNG JEONG A
Bright Side
Concept
This piece depicts an elderly man taking shelter in the subway during a severe blizzard that has persisted for a long time. Despite the desperate situation, the character finds a bright side, playing music and enjoying tea amidst the harsh weather.
The man has also set up household items and furniture to use as a makeshift refuge in the subway and Broadway area, where it used to be and should be originally busy. It shows his resilience, adaptability, and the human spirit's capacity to find light in the darkest of circumstances. The unique setting and the character's actions add depth and interest to the work.
I have thoroughly researched the objects that could be useful for human individuals living in subway station shelters, particularly in New York City. Additionally, I have gathered references on how to effectively depict the texture and appearance of snow to enhance the setting of the work.
Modeling
There were a lot of assets to make for the post-apocalyptic environment in my portfolio. Therefore, the initial placement was crucial. I started by placing multiple boxes to outline the positions, and then gradually filled in the details for the smaller elements. I dedicated more time to the main objects that are prominently visible in the camera, while creating simpler versions for the less visible ones.
This approach allowed me to efficiently manage the extensive workload and focus on the key elements that would have the most impact in the portfolio.
Texture
In a snow-covered environment portfolio, creating a realistic snow material is one of the biggest challenges. Using the basic material often resulted in a plastic-like impression rather than a snowy one.
To achieve a more authentic snow appearance, I utilized the SSS shader (Sub Surface Scatter) to give the snow a transparent and translucent feel, mimicking the way light interacts with real snow. To create the sparkling, I mixed in a flake shader. This added the necessary detail and realism to the snow material.
I thought that the items inside must have been neglected for a long time and that dust must have accumulated. So I looked for a lot of references and tried to express the materials and the way dust accumulates as similarly as possible.I don't want it to be too faded in color and have a rotten feeling, but I want to give a moderately aged feeling.
Lighting
I used Rec light to create a mood that makes the things I want to show stand out more. The exterior gives a cold, blizzard-like blue feeling, while the interior is lit with yellow to create a sense of warmth.
